Hidden Killers of the Victorian Home TV Movie 2013

We still don't know the full number of deaths that have resulted from it because it remains a lethal hazard. A magical new element was discovered in the Edwardian era - a source of energy and brightness that delighted and fascinated the Edwardians - radium. It was used, like asbestos, in all manner of products, such as cigarettes, condoms, makeup, suppositories, toothpaste and even chocolate. Above all, there was a craze for glow-in-the-dark watch faces, which were painted by the "radium girls".

Alum is an aluminium-based compound, today used in detergent, but then it was used to make bread desirably whiter and heavier. Not only did such adulteration lead to problems of malnutrition, but alum produced bowel problems and constipation or chronic diarrhoea, which was often fatal for children. Between 1851 and 1901, the average income per head in Britain doubled in real terms.

Hidden Killers—New Hidden Killers of the Victorian Home

There were dangerous miasmas in the air, but they carried mortality, not immorality. Virtue and respectability weren’t just a question of who you were, but what you had. Poor aesthetic judgement promoted immorality, "household goods became household gods" and bad taste could do as much moral damage to society as taking a mistress.

Victorian women’s corsets could exert enormous amounts of pressure on the inner organs, and distort the liver, constrict the lungs, and even displace the uterus. Besides making basic exercise uncomfortable, they predisposed women to more serious conditions like pneumonia and prolapse of the uterus, and many women continued to wear them during pregnancy, with unhappy results. Suzannah Lipscomb nominates five potential 19th-century death traps – from wallpaper to children's toys. Suzannah Lipscomb reveals the killers that lurked in every room of the Victorian home. Drowning—The Tudor Home

With the help of experts in history and science Dr Lipscomb brings the late Victorian Home, and the killers that lurked there, frighteningly to life. Suzannah Lipscomb takes us back to Tudor times in search of the era's household killers. Domestic refrigerators began to enter the home in the Edwardian era. They were tremendously useful and exciting new goods, with which the consumer could demonstrate fashionable wealth, but their initial designs were fatally flawed. They leaked toxic gases such as ammonia, methyl chloride and sulphur dioxide, which damaged the respiratory system and could easily lead to death. The late Victorian period saw the introduction of gas lighting and central heating into British homes but at first these were extremely hazardous, as the systems lacked stopcocks and release valves.

Yet, as we now well know, radium is a source of radiation poisoning - if ingested, it could lead to anaemia, bone fractures, necrosis of the jaw, and leukaemia. The late Victorians and the Edwardians lived through a domestic revolution. Theirs was a bold and exciting age of innovation, groundbreaking discoveries and dramatic scientific changes, many of which altered life at home in profound ways - including some that were terrible and unforeseen, writes historian Dr Suzannah Lipscomb. Yet, the irony is that at the very heart of the Victorian home – this place of moral safety and comforting shelter – danger lurked. Victorians were assaulted in their own houses and attacked by their very own tastefully chosen objects of status.

As the 19th century drew to an end the burgeoning middle class of Great Britain were wealthy and prosperous and filled their homes with the latest gadgets and time saving devices. At first, people didn't know how to use it - warning signs advised them not to approach the electric socket with a match. In the early 20th Century, electricity companies sought to interest consumers in electric products beyond lighting. The newspapers are full of cases of people electrocuting themselves. When basic staples like bread started to be produced cheaply and in large quantities for the new city dwellers, Victorian manufacturers seized on the opportunity to maximise profit by switching ingredients for cheaper substitutes that would add weight and bulk. Bread was adulterated with plaster of Paris, bean flour, chalk or alum.

Edwardian engineers thought they'd discovered a wonder material- a mineral that was non-flammable, cheap and clean. It was used for just about everything in the early 20th Century home - hairdryers, floor tiles, toys, oven gloves, gutters, insulation, even clothing. However, the wonder material - asbestos - was, as we now know, deadly.

At the same time, the cost of necessities, like food, dropped dramatically, and rents cost, on average, just 10 per cent of a middle-class salary. This class had both disposable income and the leisure time to plough into a new ideal of the well-appointed home as a place of comfort, refuge and wholesome morality. Perhaps the most shocking hidden killer of the Victorian age was the newly developed baby’s feeding bottle. A curved glass bottle to which was attached a piece of rubber tubing and teat provided the perfect incubators for all manner of life-threatening bacteria – and Mrs Beeton advised new mothers that they needn’t wash the teat for the two or three weeks it lasted. So the porous tubing and teat gave the flourishing bacteria direct access into the bodies of the most vulnerable.

Only in 1902 did the Pharmacy Act make it illegal for bottles of dangerous chemicals to be similar in shape to ordinary liquids. While trying to lead an empire, these rulers had no idea that the biggest threat to their lives was under their own roof. After the discovery of electricity, there were many wild inventions. Follow the beautiful Suzannah Lipscomb as she uncovers some of the scariest and most hilarious parts of history that we couldn't fathom today.

The Crystal Palace Great Exhibition of 1851 symbolised and catalysed this new age of increased prosperity, middle-class confidence and a belief in progress through science and technology. In the 1860s and 1870s Britons were accumulating wealth and possessions as never before. Home, presided over by the "ministering angel of domestic bliss" – the lady of the house, was to be, in theory, a reassuring sanctuary for men away from the jealousies, cares and dangers of working life. Suzannah Lipscomb examines the Victorian obsession with the home as a safe haven of domesticity, and explains how, in many cases, Victorian homes were anything but... The welcoming hearth of the well-ordered home behind a solid front door signified a place of seclusion and repose; a perfect antidote to the corruptions and hazards of the working world. A desire for social status and a higher standard of living meant these newly-enriched middle classes filled their homes with conspicuous commodities and contemporary technological innovations (newly termed ‘gadgets’), produced as a result of the successes of industrial manufacture. The aspiring British middle classes were themselves a product of the age. Successful industrialisation meant that between 1851 and 1901 the middle class expanded from 2.6 million people (12.5 per cent of the population) to 9.3 million people . Following a long period of increasing prosperity and peace, in the 1850s, often termed the ‘mid-Victorian calm’, the British middle classes suddenly found themselves able to build a comfortable haven of domesticity. Historian Dr Suzannah Lipscomb undertakes another investigation into the deadly consequences of ordinary life in the late Victorian era, which aired on BBC FOUR on 10th December 2013.

The bathroom as we know it is a Victorian invention, but at first, it could be a dangerous place. Besides horrible cases of scalding in the bath, there are even reports that there were incidents of lavatories spontaneously exploding. Changes to toilets - beginning in the late 18th Century and continuing in the Victorian era - sorted the problem of gas leaking. Suzannah Lipscomb takes a tour of the Victorian home and unveils the hidden dangers that posed a deadly threat to Victorian life. Even if you get a permit to use a composting toilet, you’ll still have to deal with graywater. The State allows graywater to be dumped in mini-dry wells – but only if there is no running water within the building. If you have running water, you’ll need to meet the State’s plumbing code requirements for nonpotable water systems. When buying land in New Hampshire, look at the local zoning laws. These laws ultimately determine how you can legally use your land. In some areas, there are strict zoning rules about things like how many animals you are allowed to have, minimum home sizes, minimum lot sizes, and whether you can live in a mobile home.

Manufactured housing parks straddle a complex intersection of statute, common law, culture, zoning laws, and economics. Legal questions involving manufactured housing parks can be complicated because of competing, and seemingly irreconcilable, legal doctrines. The purpose of this section is to outline the New Hampshire statute that regulates manufactured housing parks. This page discusses transferring a mobile home’s ownership from a seller to a buyer in the great state of New Hampshire. This is not intended in situations where the land the mobile home sits on is included in the sale.

Prior to your mobile home closing

Owners of manufactured housing also have "homestead rights" which protect $100,000 worth of equity ($200,000 for a married couple) from the claims of most creditors. The homestead exemption does not protect the homeowner from the claims of municipalities for unpaid taxes or from the claims of banks or other creditors who hold mortgages on the manufactured home. If you weren’t bothering anyone, the property was remote enough, and there aren’t any zoning laws in the town, you could probably get away with camping on your land. Otherwise, you might have to turn your land into a lawful “campsite,” – which has its own specific legal requirements and permits. The New Hampshire Board of Manufactured Housing can also be a significant source of protection for manufactured housing park tenants. Rainwater harvesting is legal in New Hampshire and encouraged by the State.

Extra charges for a service animal are not permitted, but the owner is liable for any damage done to the premises or another person. The law is enforced by theNew Hampshire Commission for Human Rights. The protections provided under the state are similar to the protections under the federal Fair Housing Act. TheNew Hampshire Commission for Human Rightsadministers the state law. Make sure you have clarity with regards to the mobile home you are purchasing. It may be wise to hire a local real estate inspector that has a significant amount of mobile home experience.

A new tenant may have to pay for services such as water and electricity hookup, if necessary and actually provided by the park owner. For these services, a park owner cannot charge more than the equivalent of three months’ rent. In addition, a park owner cannot charge more than one month’s rent for a security deposit or damage deposit.

If the land is included in the sale please reach out to a local real estate attorney to help facilitate your closing. However if you are dealing with an individual mobile home located in a pre-existing mobile home park, on somebody’s rented land, in a lot, or somewhere else than please see the information below. A park owner cannot charge a tenant an "entrance fee" just for moving into a manufactured housing park.

“Shoreland” generally refers to the area within 250 feet of coastal waters, navigable rivers and streams, or lakes and ponds larger than 10 acres in size. Getting a permit in these areas – even for something as simple as building a shed — can be very difficult because you have to prove the work won’t cause damage. On top of this, some areas in NH require you to get a Certificate of Occupancy before legally living in a dwelling. If your home doesn’t have running water, an electrical system, and other amenities, you might not get the Certificate. Because so many areas in New Hampshire don’t have zoning at all, you can easily find somewhere to live in a manufactured home legally.

Note that the 2018 version of the International Building Code has Appendix Q, which deals with tiny houses. If New Hampshire updates their building code, the laws will be more friendly to tiny homes. For example, the State law says that all dwellings with running water inside and not connected to the public sewer must have a state-approved wastewater disposal system.

New Hampshire has strict laws meant to protect and preserve shorelands and wetlands. In general, you will need a permit from the NHDES whenever building, excavating, or filling near a wetland or shore of public waters. New Hampshire is a water-rich state, and it generally has very relaxed rules about using water. However, the State does have strict laws for protecting bodies of water.

These laws can make it very difficult to get a permit to build or do any construction near natural waters. Unlike in most other states, many New Hampshire local governments even have rules about wind turbines. Having these rules clearly outlined in zoning laws makes it much easier to get your system approved. New Hampshire passed a law in 2016 which allowed municipalities to allow accessory dwelling units, but not every area opted in. As a result, many places in NH still have strict rules about ADUs. If allowed, they usually have to be attached to the primary building, and the owner must live there.

"New Hidden Killers" The Victorian Home TV Episode 2013

Bread was not the only food being altered - tests on 20,000 milk samples in 1882 showed that a fifth had been adulterated - but much of this was done not by manufacturers but by householders themselves. Boracic acid was believed to "purify" milk, removing the sour taste and smell from milk that had gone off. Mrs Beeton told consumers that this was "quite a harmless addition", but she was wrong.

The new science of microbes only intensified the Victorian preoccupation with tackling germs, which they now knew could lurk out of sight. Chemical cleaning products to eradicate dirt and disease were heavily advertised and highly effective, but their toxic ingredients, like carbolic acid, were contained in bottles and packages that were indistinguishable from other household products. In September 1888, the Aberdeen Evening Express reported that 13 people had been poisoned by carbolic acid in one incident - five died.

The story behind Hidden Killers of the Victorian Home

As houses were thrown up rapidly, one area of design that was often overlooked was the staircase, especially those installed for the use of servants. Made too narrow and too steep, with irregular steps, the servants' staircase was a deadly construction. Add the weight of carrying trays or the complication of long skirts, and the stairs could easily prove fatal. Much of their ingenuity was a response to the challenges of living in the newly booming cities - in 100 years, the urban population of Britain had leapt from two million in 1800 to 20 million at the turn of the 20th Century. By 1850, London was the biggest city the world had ever seen, and such enormous concentrations of people posed brand new problems of feeding, watering and housing the masses.

Ugly items of decoration, be they imitation stags’ heads or faux marble flooring, not only deceived the onlooker, but they polluted the atmosphere of the home. Such objects emitted a sort of unwholesome and dangerous miasma into the air, which infected the family who lived among them. Yet, for the notoriously strait-laced and moralistic Victorians , it was crucial that an abundance of possessions had no hint of turpitude. Instead, in their evocation of the home, consumption became a moral act and things took on moral qualities. "A correct purchase could elevate a household’s moral tone; the wrong choice could exert a malevolent influence" .

The introduction of oil and gas lamps, and the abolition of window taxes, meant that, for the first time, the Victorian middle classes could put deep, vivid colours on their walls. There was a particular fashion for wallpapers in Scheele’s Green, a brilliant, long-lasting green which was made from copper arsenite and therefore, unbeknownst to many consumers, potentially poisonous. The Times estimated that Victorian British homes contained 100 square miles of arsenic-rich wallpaper. Victorians linked cleanliness to ideas of morality and respectability - the idea that it was next to Godliness was deeply ingrained.

Before pasteurisation, milk very often contained bovine TB, which would flourish in the bacteria-friendly environment created by the substance. Bovine TB damages the internal organs and the bones of the spine, leading to severe spinal deformities. It is estimated that up to half a million children died from bovine TB from milk in the Victorian period. Not for these rising middle classes the fabled perils of Victorian factory life or the cholera of the poorest streets – this was a group of people whose lives were more comfortable than those of any other group of humans who had ever existed on the planet.

Bob, Ryan and Adam who had been working together as the “boys” went through high school and college started planning what would end up being a family owned and operated business serving the Kawartha Lakes and area. Bob is the founder of the company, and the sole reason we are all part of the RWH family today! He started in the home construction business 40 years ago, and worked hard to grow the RWH empire. Bob’s passion, dedication and energy are what he built this company on, and are the key elements that still drive this company forward to success.

We provide the finest in materials and craftsmanship, and we offer straight talk, a commitment to our clients, and the experience of hundreds of completed projects. For our clients, this means that we never settle for second best, and we believe our job is not complete until our client is satisfied. We constantly remind ourselves of what has brought us to this point, we have key members of the staff that are the best in the business at what they do and they keep quality work happening and happy customers. From a business stand point we don’t get greedy and always put the extra effort and highest quality materials from the ground up. That being said it is a fulltime job to keep up with Bob’s legacy he has left us and we are dedicated and happy to do it.

We were warned about the tiresome selection process and about the difficulty and strained relationships working with home builders during the construction process. We were given lots of personal attention and assistance as we walked through each step in the process. We were partnered with amazing contractors/vendors to guide us through the MANY endless selections. And probably, most importantly, we had constant communication and support, which can not be underestimated. RWH Energy proudly partners with our sister company RWH Risk Management.

Anything in regards to the planning stages of a build, or even calling on him to change light bulbs, Adam is our guy. He is able to resolve any issue, and if he doesn’t have an answer, he’s never afraid to admit it, but gets on finding the answer right away. Take a look at garage and storage solutions we have provided customers. Our social links are always being updated and provide a "behind-the-scenes" look into what is entailed in the building process. A year later, we are still thrilled with the detailed craftsmanship and beauty of our home! Our home has been admired by friends, family, neighbors walking their dogs, and even by other home builders.
